Stabilization Meditation
Leads to concentration and eventually Calm Abiding (Sanskrit: Shamatha, Tibetan: Shine). I use stabilization meditation at the beginning of each session for everyone to be able to ‘land’ and center themselves. Very simply, we train the mind to focus through various techniques such as focusing on the breath and counting. Over time we can develop single pointed concentration and be able to hold it, without distraction, for longer periods of time.

Visualization Meditation
We imagine and visualize all day long... fantasizing about delicious food or bodies, or that thing we want to buy, and we are super at it. In Tibetan Buddhism, visualization is utilized as a meditation technique. In its simplest form, one might imagine white light as purification and golden light as blessing and inspiration. In the more advanced form, Tantra, one might visualize a Buddha made of light, in front of us or above our head, sending light from their heart to our heart, while we recite the mantra of that Buddha or deity. The various deities in Tibetan Buddhism embody qualities we want to develop. When we imagine Chenrezig, the Buddha of Compassion, for example, and recite his mantra Om Mani Padme Hum, we activate this compassionate energy within ourselves. Through these meditations one can get a taste of the phenomenal potential that lies within us.

Analytical Meditation
A form of meditation used to develop insight, or correct understanding of the way things are and particularly to eventually attain ‘Special Insight’ (Sanskrit: Vipashyana). ‘Special Insight’ is commonly associated with the 10-day meditation courses in the Pali tradition where one pays attention to the various sensations in the body to understand the impermanent nature of things. I am using analytical meditation in the Lam Rim Year meditation sessions. What we are doing here is analysis; simply developing the ability to think through logically the various points of the path, drawing examples form our own lives and allowing these points to move from our intellectual brains into our hearts. In this way, the Lam Rim meditations will gradually feel more experiential rather than just an intellectual idea.
